Art Encounter (2003)

Artist's statement for exhibition at the Von Liebig Center, Naples, Florida, December 6, 2003 - January 17, 2004.

My paintings are painted horizontally, on a large dead-level platform, by accumulating partially transparent layers of tinted acrylic gel and polymer mediums which I work with a floor squeegee, a street broom, rollers and other tools. When a large (up to 10' x 20') sheet is finished it is cropped and edited severely to find the best paintings in it.

Although I usually begin with a few ideas about how I might proceed the painting is always made by reacting intuitively to the present situation in the painting, whatever that may be.

I think that art, when it is good enough, represents us at our best, and that this best can only be apprehended through intuition and feeling.
