Catalog statement (1990)
Chairman's Statement, University of Miami Student Exhibition catalog, Lowe Art Museum, April 5 - May 27, 1990.
CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT
Art students at the University of Miami are privileged and fortunate to have a bona-fide professional art museum on their campus which is committed to show their work regularly. The experience of high-level exhibition is part of the experience of the professional artist; the New Gallery at the Department of Art and Art History and the Lowe Museum are resources which provide that experience to our students in good measure.
This exhibit of work by undergraduate and first year graduate students was selected by professors in the Art Department to represent each of the disciplines we teach, including foundations. The awards were made by Robert Sindelir, Director of the Art Gallery at Miami-Dade Community College. South Campus. We are grateful to him for bringing his wisdom and experience to us. I recommend his provocative Juror's Statement to everyone.
We owe our thanks to those who did the interminable, nuts-and-bolts job of hanging the show with all the built-in but unforeseeable frustrations. Ron Fondow, Bill Ward and Peter Zorn of the faculty and graduate students Michele Edelson and Pam Hiller; to Marion Jefferson for putting the catalog together and Cindy McKenzie for organizing the awards; to Brian Dursam, Director of the Lowe Museum, and his staff; for their cooperation; and to fiber artist B. J. Katifinan and the Weaving/Fiber students for the ever popular "Wearable Art Fashion Show."
This is a fine exhibit with lots of variety. Congratulations to the students and many thanks to the generous donors who make it possible to acknowledge their best work.
Darby Bannard, Chairman
Professor
Department of Art and Art History
