In Search of Quiet Time for Art Lovers (1988)
New York Times, Section 2, June 19, 1988, p. 15. Letter to the editor.
The Guggenheim Museum has hired a director ["Thinking Big at the Guggenheim," May 29] who has "high-tech skills, entrepreneurial know-how and global ambitions." He teaches "Contemporary Strategies in Art and Criticism," so he has the "key to being a strategic player." He is an "empire builder" whose nickname is "the Sphinx," a "computer freak" whose aides "modem" people.
Lord, have mercy on this ancient craft of ours. Find a quiet refuge for art and art lovers, and send us a guardian of the spirit.
